Hello, My wife's family is originally from Czechoslovakia and she is very proud of her heritage. Unfortunately she has not yet had a chance to visit but one day we will! Anyway, I thought it might be a unique Valentines gift to put together a coin set from her birth year, a mint set would even be better if they were ever made. I was hoping to find a set of coins minted in 1962 all in a nice holder of some sort but I could always make something myself if I could get the coins. Here of course lies the problem. First off, I do not even know which coins were minted in 1962 (Korunas and Halerus?) or in which denominations (10, 20, 50, etc.). Secondly, I have looked all over the internet trying to find someone to sell me the coins but have had no luck. I believe my biggest problem is that I do not speak or read Czech. So that brings me to my post here. Is there anyone out there that can point me in a direction of a coin dealr that speaks English? Or better yet, are there any coin collectors that read these messages that would be willing to help me out. Or maybe even someone who happens to have some old coins they would like to sell. One last question. Does anyone know of a website (in English) that sells unique Czech items and ships to the US? I thank you all for your time and consideration. Jeff
Here's a couple of places to start: http://auctions.yahoo.com/search?p=1962+czechoslovakia&cat=51476 and http://coins.search.ebay.com/czechoslovakia-1962_Coins-Paper-Money_W0QQfkrZ1QQfromZR8QQsacatZ11116. By the way, both haléři (hellers) and koruny (crowns) were in circulation then. One heller is 1/100 of a koruna (crown). Also, I noticed that there is a very rare tříhaléřů (3 heller) coin minted in 1962. That in and of itself might be worth it (from what I have seen online, it is worth upwards of $50). Note there are some E-bay sellers with online stores, with whom you may be able to make requests. My guess is that the entire set of minted Czechoslovak coins from 1962 would include 1, 3, 5, 10, 25, 50 hellers, and 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 (and maybe 100 or higher) crowns.
It is not such a long time ago, but the memory does not work properly. As I remember, there were no coins of higher denomination than 5 Kčs, and in my opinion there were these coins: 1, 3, 5, 10, 25 hal., 1, 3, 5 Kčs, and some special silver coins 10, 20, 25, 50, 100 Kčs (these special ones not from the year 1962) In 1953 (the year of monetary reform) even the 1 Kčs was a (paper) banknote. But don't beat me if I'm wrong.
OK, I consulted my coins catalogue and it says that the entire set of coins minted in 1962 includes 1 h, 3 h, 5 h, 10 h, 25 h and 1 Kčs (no commemorative coins in 1962). So, Karel was nearly right. Only 3 Kčs was minted since 1965 and 5 Kčs since 1966 (there was also 50 h minted since 1963). As Sova mentioned, the 3 h coin is a rarity and could be very expensive - my catalogue quotes 2400 Kč (in 1994!!!) for an intact coin.
Wow, I really appreciate all the help everyone is offering! So far, I have found one full set of coins less the 3 h. I found a collector who has the 3h but as you said it is expensive ($300.00 US). I am still looking for 1 more complete set so if any has any more ideas, I am open for suggestions. Also, I would like to get the two bills (paper) issued in 1962 which I believe are the 3 and 5 Korun. Thanks again, Jeff
No Czechoslovak banknotes issued in 1962. See: http://www.numis.cz/cr004.html Coins: http://www.p-numis.ic.cz/csr1953-1992.htm
I found (and bought) a 20 Korun silver coin supposedly from 1962 on eBay. Here is a link to it: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... &rd=1&rd=1 Can anyone give me more information on this? Thanks, Jeff
They were in circulation, but not issued in 1962. To be precise, no banknotes (nor state notes) printed in 1962, but two issued in 1962: 25 Kčs (printed 1961, but issued on May 2nd, 1962) 100 Kčs (printed 1961, but issued on December 1st, 1962) Nice link with perfect pictures, but I miss there the 3 h coin minted in 1962, the biggest rarity. It is of the 1963-look. 20 Kčs (commemorative coin minted 1972) The 100th anniversary of Andrej Sládkovič's death (A. Sládkovič was a Slovak poet) Ag 500/1000, diam 29mm, 9 g, author: J. Kulich
